When it comes to having my mane tamed, I can count on one hand, the number of times I've gone to an actual hair salon in the last 10 years, usually preferring to stick with my favourite mobile hairdresser. Having a trim sat on a dining chair in my living room proved to be both convenient and efficient, not to mention cost effective. Always pleased with the finished result, I thought why go to the extra effort of venturing out to a salon?
What I didn't appreciate was that something simple like having your hair done is not just about refreshing your look, but a chance to reset your mind as well, especially when you lead a busy life full of demands from others. Combining the maintenance of your tresses with a stress-free environment where it's all about you for an hour or two is a small act for the greater good of the soul, as I found out when I took myself along to The Curious Comb in London.
My visit here made a refreshing change to a having the chop done at home in record time. Being looked after by staff, complete with the offer of a cappuccino and a head massage (is the latter not just the BEST thing ever?!) certainly beats the convenience of having someone come to you. I love the fact that they are happy to work outside the box and try less conventional hairstyles that may have other stylists running for the hills and a massive upside is that they're not afraid of curls or afro hair which can often be an issue (if you know, then you know!) From a simple cut, to vibrant colours and cornrows, they can pretty much do anything you want. It also doesn't hurt that every corner of the place has a distinctive style and can fill an Instagram feed to boot. From the launderette inspired reception with 50s influenced seating and hairdryers, to a cosy washroom with shell themed and mirrored walls, it's easy to forgot about the outside stresses of life for a morning.

I returned home with my locks a reflection of the Pinterest pic I flashed to my stylist Ellis, while feeling relaxed yet ready to take on the world. As someone who likes their creature comforts and holds convenience high up on their list of priorities, going along to The Curious Comb has reminded me that taking a little time out for myself to get the full salon treatment is definitely worth it.
